How to Start Making Money As a Coach
If you’re like many people destined to become coaches, it may feel like you’ve been “coaching” people for a long time. You’ve been listening, showing empathy, and giving advice to friends and family – people naturally gravitate towards you when they need help, because that’s just who you are. You already know how amazing it feels to be able to help someone gain traction in their life and move towards their dreams. And you’re ready to turn your natural abilities into a career that’s both meaningful and profitable. Yet in order to turn that dream into reality, there are some practical considerations that come first. Namely, can I make a living by coaching? How much can I charge? How much SHOULD I charge? And another, more basic question:
“Do People Really Pay Money For Coaching?”
If you’ve been “giving away” your support, your advice, and your focus to people, it can seem incredible that clients will actually hire you for coaching services. But the numbers speak for themselves.- Life coaching is a $2.4 billion per year industry according to estimates by PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the world’s most respected analysis companies. (PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2016).
- The demand is growing at nearly 5% per year (IBISWorld, 2017)—and global growth is likely much higher.
- 75% of coaches expect their income to increase over the next year (according to a survey of practicing coaches around the world by the The International Coaching Federation.) (PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2016).
How to Hit the Ground Running
If you’re just starting out, you might wonder: how do I find paying clients? The truth is that potential clients – people who would like to increase their effectiveness at achieving their goals – are all around us. Don’t believe the myth that clients are hard to find. In fact, we encourage our students to start getting paying clients – even before you’ve completed your training. Why? Because there’s no better way to get practice as a coach – than to work with real paying clients. So, we’ve developed the most streamlined pathway in the industry – to take you from where you are now to becoming a well-paid professional coach. How Long Does It Take To Start Getting Paying Clients?
This is the most common question new coaches ask us, and the answer is – it depends. We’ve had some students who landed their first real, paying clients during our Core 100 program, and hundreds of successful graduates who go on to create serious full-time professional incomes. Here are just a few of our students who have gone from total beginner to well-paid professional coach. Shawn Carpenter, a coach from Victoria, BC says: “I have always struggled with not feeling good enough – in part, because I didn’t live what I know, and I struggled to support my wife and three kids in all ways – financially, emotionally, etc… and now that’s finally beginning to change. I’m now making the income that I have always wanted (I’ve hit my first financial goal of $10,000/month, now I am aiming at my next goal of $20,000/month), and for the first time, looking at how I can love my family instead of gaining love from them. I’m also taking the steps to be who I am deep down inside, rather than stopping myself out of fear itself or fear of what others think. Who am I? In essence, a warrior, here to create transformation for myself and those around me! RMT has given me another chance at life – to be who I’m here to be, fulfill my purpose, and support my wife and kids in the way I have always longed to do.” Kate Kolskog, a coach from Calgary, Canada says: “Without RMT, I know I would not have been able to overcome the fear of going forward with my business plan to open my own private practice. Now I also have bigger plans to build on my business, and open a wellness centre. I am amazed as what I have done in the course of six-nine months just by watching the RMT tapes, listening to power sessions, doing the inner strength program, and now completing the coaching. It fine tuned many of the skills that I have as a Marriage and Family Clinician and as a Registered Psychologist.”How Much Do Life Coaches Make?
Professional Coaches hourly income is similar to the hourly income of a Psychologist. The level of that income depends on a few factors: the type of coaching you do, where you’re located, and how you position yourself. Coaches who are starting out generally charge a range of between $100 to $300 per hour. We recommend our coaches start at $150 per session as a rule of thumb, although we will also encourage you to offer three month coaching packages (at a flat fee). As you gain experience, and your reputation grows, you can raise your rates – some coaches can easily command $500 or more per hour. These are the average rates for a one-hour coaching session, according to the 2016 International Coaching Federation study:
- $321 per hour – 10 years or more
- $256 per hour – 5 – 10 years
- $194 per hour – 3 – 4 years
- $152 per hour – 1 – 2 years
- $128 per hour — Less than 1 year
What to Do Next…
You’re ready to take the first step towards your new life… A life where your work is meaningful, both to you and to the people whose lives you change. And you can’t wait to start a career where you are in control of what you do and the hours you work. Now, you can try to figure everything out on your own…- How to coach
- How to get clients
- How to run a business

Escaping the 9-5: Your Simple Transition Plan to Working for Yourself
It’s a Monday morning and you’re rudely awoken by your alarm clock… The thought of getting up and commuting to work feels like a prison sentence. The 9 to 5 grind is wearing you down – you’re rushing, tired, and stressed all the time. And you dream of doing something different – working for yourself, doing something that makes a real difference in people’s lives.
But on the other hand…
You have to pay the bills. But what if you could pay the bills (and then some) as a successful professional coach? Most successful coaches who made the transition from being an employee to working for themselves had a plan – and that’s exactly what we want to walk you through here. The Three Types of Coaches-in-the-Making
There are three ways to approach the transition from the 9-5 to becoming a coach:- Jumping in with both feet: These are the people who go all in and quit their jobs to give everything they’ve got to coaching, but without a plan and training.
- The Perpetual Dreamers: These people dream of working for themselves, but can never quite work up the courage to leave the safety and security of their 9-5.
- The Smart Transition: These are the ones who transition the smart way—first get training, then get clients, then leave work as they gradually replace their salary with freelance income.
- Define Your Goal
- Make a time plan
- The training and certification you’ll need
- Spreading the word in your networks to get your first clients
- Setting up a home office
- Giving notice to your employer
- Registering your business
- Network network network
- Take the plunge
55 million Americans have done it!
Fun fact – 55 million Americans work as freelancers. And that figure is growing by about half a million every year as more and more people reach for their dream of freedom and flexibility in their work. And in terms of the coaching industry… The demand for coaching is the highest it’s ever been—and it’s going to keep growing over the next few years.- Life coaching is a $2.4 billion per year industry according to estimates by PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the world’s most respected analysis companies.

Checklist: 10 Things You Need to Become a Life Coach (and 5 That You Don’t)
If you’re thinking about becoming a life coach and making your dream of helping people improve their lives come true (while you work from home and set your own hours)…welcome! Right now, if you’re like other promising coaching students we’ve met, you’ve got a big vision for what you want, and you’re excited (but maybe a bit nervous) to take that first step. So we want to give you a quick checklist of the 10 essential things you need to become a life coach (and 5 that you don’t need) – you might be surprised! Does this sound like you?
- You care about people and want to help make the world a better place.
- People often come to you for advice, or to get something off their chest.
- You’re curious about what makes people tick.
- You try not to be judgmental.
- You love reading books or attending workshops about personal growth.
- You’ve overcome some hurdles in your own life which have given you insight into how to get through tough times.
10 Qualities You Need to Become a Life Coach
(and 5 That You Don’t)
#1 The desire to help people While you can expect to make a good, or even great living from coaching, your primary motivation for choosing this path should be a desire to help people change their lives. Being a life coach can bring you great satisfaction, as your clients reach new understandings and experience personal and professional growth. But it also requires patience, understanding, flexibility, and humility. So anyone looking for an easy way to make money may find themselves frustrated, but those with a passion for helping will flourish! #2 Empathy Empathy means being able to pick up on verbal and non-verbal cues to understand the feelings and emotions of other people—and feel ‘with’ them. It’s one of the cornerstones of great coaches. Although some people are intuitively empathetic, it is a skill you can work on. Empathy will fuel your desire, as a coach, to help your clients towards a solution. And it helps us to keep our own judgments out of the mixture, because we can imagine ourselves ‘in their shoes.’ #3 Intuition You’ll know if you have this kind of natural wisdom if people often come to you for advice, guidance, or maybe even to bounce ideas off you and get a second opinion. Coaching is a profession where your intuition becomes a career asset for you. #4 Communication skills The good news about the communication skills needed to be a successful coach is that they can be learned. And here’s an amazing bonus: everything you’ll learn in life coach training will benefit you in your life too. So your personal relationships will improve and everyone around you will benefit. The core communication skills we’ll work on are: the ability to listen without interrupting or offering advice. This is one of the most valuable skills a coach can possess and surprisingly often one of the hardest to acquire. Second: the ability to ‘reflect’ back, or paraphrase what clients say. This helps them digest and understand a situation on a deeper level. Third: coaches know how to ask the right questions – solution-focused questions designed to shift your clients’ thinking. #5 Curiosity Coaches are naturally curious about humans, human behavior and what makes a person tick. Their clients fascinate them and they are driven to discover the deeper reasons for their behavior. And on a personal level, successful coaches are always thirsty for learning and knowledge. They love reading and attending seminars and training programs that can help them improve their skills and knowledge. #6 Humility As coaches we’re not aiming to be seen as an expert with all the answers. Our aim is to help our clients find the answers within themselves and move in the right direction. Our humility is often what makes people feel safe to open up and trust us. #7 Positivity As a coach you are helping to create a better life for your clients. But many of them will resist change, even though they have come to you looking for it and even when they know it is the right path! It’s our job to stay positive and encouraging, especially when clients are reluctant, hopeless, or feel like giving up. #8 The ability to set boundaries Successful coaches need to set boundaries for themselves and their clients with regard to punctuality, payment, cancellations, confidentiality and accountability. Setting and sticking to boundaries can be hard for many of us, so it’s something we’ll focus on in the training. #9 A Growth Mindset The best coaches are always stepping outside their comfort zone and growing (just as we expect our clients to do). #10 Certification Being empathetic, a good listener, humble, curious, and all the other qualities we listed above is important. But to be able to harness those skills and make them work for other people, you need proven coaching strategies that get results. When you learn from experts in the field, who’ve been helping people make change for decades, that’s exactly what you’ll get. And you’ll develop the confidence, professionalism and business skills you need to make this a success.5 Things You Don’t Need to Become a Life Coach
#1 A college degree This is a common misconception that stops a lot of people stepping into a role they were made for. So let me state this clearly: You don’t need a college degree to become a coach. A college degree doesn’t make you empathetic, curious, positive, or know how to listen. You can get those skills from life – and the strategies to turn those skills into results for your clients from our training course. So you don’t have to have gone down the college route (although having a degree – or two – doesn’t hurt!) #2 A fancy office Since life coaching is all about making people feel comfortable, safe and supported, a fancy office is not necessarily the natural setting for it. In fact, many life coaches work out of their homes by turning one room into a warm, cozy place to receive clients, or work over the internet with clients from near and far. That’s one of the things that makes this a low-cost start-up that anyone can manage. #3 A ton of spare time You can train to become a life coach while still working in your regular job and then gradually build up your practice until you feel ready to go all in. We’ve built a training program that works with your schedule, that you can go through at your own pace. All the training sessions are recorded – even the weekly live coaching calls. #4 High-tech skills If you’re worried that you’ll need to set up a website, grow a mailing list, write blogs, and open a Facebook group to attract clients, then let us put your mind to rest. You don’t need any of those things at the beginning because your first clients will almost certainly find you through word of mouth or by referral. And it’s much better for your clients that you invest time in your coaching abilities, rather than in fancy marketing. #5 Previous coaching experience Most people who become life coaches don’t have previous coaching experience, and haven’t worked in therapy. So the training is designed to give you all the information, tools and strategies you need, both to coach clients and to build a business. By now you probably have a better idea if you’ve got what it takes to become a coach. But don’t forget that with some training, you can acquire all the skills you need. Now all you need is to start believing in yourself…and to take the next small step to make this dream a reality.Ready to Take The Next Step?

Real Stories of Coaching Success
If you’re someone who wants to become a life coach, you might find it hard to believe right now that you could become a successful, thriving, professional coach. And while that feeling is completely normal, don’t let it stop you from following the path that you truly want. Now, we could try to convince you that you have what it takes to become a coach – because you do. But instead of doing that, we want to tell you about some of our students who went through the training – and who are now successful coaches because of it. These are just a few of the hundreds of stories that we have. All of these stories are true and are from people who have completed the Robbins-Madanes Core 100 training and are making at least $60k/year as a coach. [Need headshot images if we can] Mariana Ferrari from Miami was inspired to become ‘the Spanish Tony Robbins’ after reading his book Unlimited Power. But she could never have imagined just how quickly and widely her success would spread. Mariana joined RMT , and within a short time started helping thousands of people worldwide by posting weekly coaching videos on her website. Then Telemundo offered to feature her content, which meant an instant 12,000 new subscribers to her website. Mariana feels that joining RMT gave her the tools to fulfill her purpose: helping middle-aged people to reset their lives, combined with the ability to make a great living. However, she says that the most important thing RMT gave her is self-healing. “It took my life to the next level. I forgave myself. I forgave others. I became compassionate, loving and sensitive to other’s feelings. I could not ask for more. I always recommend my students who want to become coaches to do it through RMT.” Kate Kolskog, a marriage and family clinician and a registered psychologist from Calgary, Canada, joined RMT to get the confidence to move forward with her business. Fear was holding her back from opening her own private practice, and RMT gave her the tools and self-confidence to overcome it. Now she has even bigger plans to open a wellness center. She’s also fine-tuned the skills she already had by incorporating RMT’s strategies and tools. “I am amazed at what I have done in the course of six months just by watching the RMT tapes, listening to power sessions, doing the inner strength program, and now completing the coaching.” Dennis Giannetti, from Florida set out to become an outstanding coach commanding top fees and having a lasting impact on people’s lives, so he knew that RMT was the right choice, but he found it hard to commit to signing up. But once he did, the strategies he gained through RMT provided him with critical skills and understanding of why people do what they do. Now he’s able to use them to help people to breakthrough self-imposed barriers, often both on a personal and professional level. Nowadays Dennis specializes in helping sales professionals and entrepreneurs achieve the mindset, skillset, and strategies for a meaningful and profitable life and career. He;s much more confident about his coaching abilities and as a result has raised his fees and is looking to take advantage of new opportunities. His deepest satisfaction comes from being instrumental in changing so many people’s lives. Chad Cooper, from Michigan, had a successful career in the IT industry. He was earning big money, but felt depressed and angry. He decided it was time to start living by his deepest values and signed up for RMT. Since completing RMT he coaches professional athletes, businessmen and also specializes in marriage coaching. Now, as a businessman, philanthropist, and adventurer, he aims to live by example and helps others turn their dreams into reality. He credits RMT for giving him the ability to step up in his own marriage and create an extraordinary relationship. Chad says: “If you have never been to the top it can be difficult to help others visualize or understand that it is possible. I can now transfer that skillset into coaching using active listening along with specific relational tools to transform my clients relationships.” Lyn DaSylva was an experienced coach when she came to RMT looking for new tools to help clients that were stuck. The RMT sessions, and calls she listened to, gave her the language and perspective to help her clients create the needed shifts to face the glass ceilings they were challenged with. Not only that but the Robbins-Madanes training rekindled her passion as a coach to more fully show up in her sessions and to listen for ways to be effective with renewed enthusiasm. “Working with passion and appreciating the ease of it all, has improved every aspect of my inner terrain” she says. Lieve Jacobs had a successful corporate career but wanted to leave to concentrate on doing what he really loved: helping leaders with high potential, to get even better at what they are doing. “If I hadn’t taken this program, I would still be working in corporate America, having my life directed by others” Lieve confesses. He’s so happy he took charge of his own life and well being, and feels much more fulfilled now, as he contributes and helps many others, “Giving back what I’ve learned during my international executive career, and growing as a person, gives me a great feeling.” Michelle Barr from Texas was working in a service based business earning a very low wage and struggling to make ends meet. Her work drained her time and energy, and she felt dissatisfied and unfulfilled. Since training with RMT she’s left that all behind and built a global online business. Coaching has become her number one method of serving. At RMT she learned strategies to help her clients align with their most important goals and values, especially in mindset, which leads to taking action and getting results. “It makes me happy to be able to show up every day and do what I am made to do and be who I am here to be. The money I am able to make as a coach allows me to have a profitable business that is sustainable and to support the life I want to live.” Shawn Carpenter had been a coach for two years when he realized that he needed more tools to take his clients’ businesses, and his own life, to the next level. Shaun wanted to give his clients a complete transformation in every area of their lives – and one that was authentic and permanent. He was sure that RMT could provide him with the missing piece that he needed. He was also looking for help in his own life, so that he could finally break through patterns and barriers that has plagued him: like not feeling good enough, and struggling to support his wife and three kids both financially, emotionally. As a result of training with Robbins-Madanes, he has totally changed his life to embody the concepts and truths that he has always wanted to. He’s making the income that he has always wanted (he’s hit his first goal of $10,000/month, and is now aiming for $20,000), and for the first time, looking at how he can love his family, instead of gaining love from them. He’s also taking steps to be who he is deep down inside, rather than stopping himself out of fear itself, or fear of what others think. Shawn says that RMT has given him another chance at life: “To be who I’m here to be, fulfill my purpose, and support my wife and kids in the way I have always longed to do.” Prem Dana Takada from Australia was feeling stuck in her career because she was busy with so many things. She credits RMT for giving her back her motivation, and also a place that feels like home, something that she never found anywhere else in her 30 year career as a therapist and coach. She says that RMT is much more than just a course, but has become a part of her spiritual and emotional evolution as she steps up to her next level of calling. Neil Sattin from Portland, Maine felt that his business was growing too slowly and that he wanted to make greater strides. Training with RMT skyrocketed the results he was having in terms of being able to effect change in people’s lives. That in turn has led to referrals, as well as new confidence in being able to tackle any issue that a client presented to him. RMT also gave him key insights into how he was living his life – the places where he was showing up well and succeeding, and places where he was missing the mark. “The effective strategies, and the confidence it inspires, is something that RMT has offered me that I either would otherwise have not had – it would have taken me years to make the same kind of progress in my own practice” Neil says. Geraldine Anathan, from New York was a life coach before taking RMT, but felt like she was sometimes telling her clients what she thought they wanted to hear. During the training, she particularly enjoyed the personal attention she received from Mark and Magali, who taught her a lot about being exactly who she is while coaching: sincere and focused. Geraldine had been through coaching programs before, but says that “compared to my previous training, RMT is a far superior program.” She also feels like she benefits from having the Robbins-Madanes brand name behind her, claiming that it gives her confidence and helps her to present herself enthusiastically. Modita Judit Wieser, from Switzerland had been through a lot of different training programs as a coach and therapist, but still wondered if she was a good coach and whether she should quit her business. Before each session, she’d worry about not being able to handle a situation. RMT gave her the foundation she was always missing, and just 4 weeks after attending the program and working through the materials, her self-confidence had grown 100%. She is sure that her clients are much happier because they have more breakthroughs and deeper self realizations. On a personal level Modita feels happier, more balanced, more energetic and more relaxed, because she now has the confidence that she’s a good coach and can handle any situation that her clients need her help with. - How to choose a program that’s right for you
The Coaching Industry and Your Future In It!
Here’s what you need to know… The demand for coaching is the highest it’s ever been—and it’s going to keep growing over the next few years. Coaches are now helping people all over the world make changes in their health, their relationships, in the way they parent, with their finances, and with their businesses. But the burning question for someone who is considering coaching as a career is: “Can I make a living from coaching?” The resounding answer is: ‘Yes.’ And the numbers speak for themselves:- Life coaching is a $2.4 billion per year industry according to estimates by PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the world’s most respected analysis companies.
This Will Give You The Edge
Perhaps you’ve been listening and giving advice to your friends and family for years, and so taking the next step to making this a career seems like a natural progression. But before you start calling yourself a coach, consider this…there’s a world of difference between offering advice to people who know and trust you already, and strangers who’ll be paying you to help them get results. With paying clients:- You need to establish your credibility so they’ll hire you.
- You need to win their trust so they’ll ‘open up’ and you can get to the root of the issue.
- And finally, you need to get them results, so they feel they are getting value for money (and will refer more clients to you).
The Benefits Of Training
Here’s what a proven training program will give you:- It gives you a head start on the road to success – According to industry surveys, certified coaches establish themselves more quickly, charge higher rates and stay in the industry longer.
- It gives you a leading edge – Certification sets you apart from others. It shows that you take the profession seriously, which makes people take you more seriously.
- It reassures your clients – Potential clients look for positive signs to hire you, like recommendations, certification from a respected source, etc.
- It gives you credibility – Clients automatically assume you are better qualified to help them when you have undergone training and have certification.
- It gives you confidence – Many coaches say that training and certification gave them a level of confidence they wouldn’t otherwise have reached as quickly.
- It will help you build a ‘tribe’ – You’ll meet teachers, other coaches and be exposed to resources you may otherwise not know of.
What To Look For In A Training Program
The number one factor that you should look for in a training program is proof that it works:- Who is behind the program?
- Are they successful coaches themselves?
- Do they have experience in training coaches?
- How do we know that their strategies will get your clients results?
- Can you read recommendations from past students?
- Training modules giving instruction in the core coaching method
- Training modules showing how to apply the method in client consultations
- Live sessions with your teachers so you can get your questions answered
- Personalized feedback and support
- Practical business advice on marketing your services
- Access to a peer community for support and encouragement
- A certificate of completion
- Accreditation via recognized coaching standards organizations
- Flexible and affordable payment options and a fair money-back guarantee
How To Choose The Right Program For You
When it comes to choosing a program that’s right for you, you need to consider whether:- You want face-to-face interaction with your teacher, recorded lessons, or a combination of the two.
- You can commit to learning at certain hours each week, or need something more flexible.
- You want to learn at home.
- You need accountability to make sure that you get this done.
- Traditional in-person classroom learning
- Online learning with a combination of live and recorded sessions
- Online learning which is completely independent with no live interaction.
Advantages Disadvantages Traditional in-person classroom learning Personal interaction between students and trainers, and students with other students. This is usually the most expensive option. Ability to receive answers to questions on-the-spot It’s less convenient in terms of travel and scheduling. Student commits to a set timetable, so is more likely to complete the course. There’s no flexibility to learn at your own pace Teachers hold the students accountable for completion of coursework. Industry leaders don’t generally teach in this format. Less distractions during training than in a home environment. Personal feedback. An online course with a mix of recorded sessions and live teacher-led sessions It’s usually more affordable than an in-person option. Students are usually only accountable to themselves for completing the program. You can learn on your own schedule at your own pace. Interaction with trainers and other students in a group setting is less free-flowing. You learn in the comfort and convenience of your own home. Questions and feedback are usually given in writing via email which can take time and is less personal. You meet people from all over the world and so are exposed to greater networking opportunities. Need some technology know-how. May include personal supervision & feedback. An online course with recorded, self-paced sessions only The least expensive option. Students are accountable only to themselves for completing the program. You learn in the comfort and convenience of your own home. No interaction at all with trainers or other students, meaning the process can be isolating. You have total flexibility on when and where you can study. Often no opportunity for questions or feedback. You can progress through the program at your own pace. No way to tell if the learning is being integrated. Need some technological know-how.
